What is a Silver Alert?

Silver Alerts are relatively new in the United States. As of this writing, approximately 24 states are active participants in this program. (January 2010) Many more states are in the process of presenting their state legislatures to petition for Silver Alerts or are in the process of implementing a program.

Silver Alerts are issued primarily for those who are known to wander and become missing due to disorientation or cognitive disabilities. Alzheimer and dementia patients are the most likely to wander unexpectedly. Every 72 seconds someone will be diagnosed with dementia. Six out of ten people with dementia and other cognitive disorders will wander away at some point.

The Silver Alert criteria may vary from state to state, however, most states also recognize that loved ones with autism are known to wander and most have adopted autism in the criteria, as well. Please check your individual state for the criteria for Silver Alerts.
